The 2024th Tsukuba Prize and The 2024th Tsukuba Encouragement Prize

1. Purpose

To encourage researchers who are involved in research on Science and Technology in the prefecture, and to honor the researchers who have achieved significant research as well as creative research accomplishments.


2.Award name and selection criteria

Tsukuba Prize

Selection range :
One person/research group in Natural Science department.

Eligibility :
Person/group involved in any of the following research fields such as fundamental science, applied science and development science, in Engineering and Life Science (collaboration research subjects to those who contribute 1/3 or more to the research).

Selection criteria :
Researcher corresponds to any of the following with internationally recognized results and achievement;
  -Participate current research activities in the prefecture or former research activities in the past.
  -Participate in an international conference, held in the prefecture and published research results the initial time.

Content :
The award (honorable certificate), Medal and Prize (5 million yen).



Tsukuba Encouragement Prize

Selection range :
Two persons/groups in Natural Science department (one per subject).

Eligibility :
Person/group with potential to contribute and promote Science and Technology, involved in any of the following research fields such as fundamental science, applied science and development science in Engineering and Life Science.

Selection criteria :

Research for Practical Use:
Researchers with current research project in the prefecture or former research activities in the past. Besides, researchers who have contributed, such matters as research results are applied in practical uses, and promoted Science and Technology in the prefecture (collaboration research subjects to those who contribute 1/3 or more to the research).

Young Researchers :
Researchers who carrying out current research in the prefecture(age below 40), and with potential to achieve significant research results (collaboration research subjects to those who contribute 1/2 or more to the research).

Content :
The award (honorable certificate), Medal and Prize (1 million yen).


3. The 2024th Tsukuba Prize and the 2024th Tsukuba Encouragement Prize schedule

Candidate application : December 25, 2023 - March 15, 2024(no later than)
Examination : April - September 2024
Decision of the winners : Around August - September 2024
Award ceremony : Around November 2024, Joint ceremony of the Leo Esaki Prize, the Tsukuba Prize and the Tsukuba Encouragement Prize.

4. Selection method

Recommendation from the following;
Universities in the prefecture, national research institute/independent administrative agency and private research institutes (104 institutes).


5. Selection process

The winner will be determined by Tsukuba Prize committee through a review and preliminary examination.
